Embracing Change

Change. A word that still makes me screw up my face a little. I’m a routine-kinda-gal and have learned from past experience that change often acts as a trigger for my depressive and disordered episodes.

Now, this fact is a major BUMMER!! Why? Because change in life is inevitable and may not necessarily be a bad thing. In fact, it can be great, propelling you into new and exciting things and enabling you to learn more about yourself. This is why my heart sinks when I feel those familiar symptoms creeping back into my life when lots of new, exciting things are happening.

In the last few months, lots of changes have happened in my life. New job. New house. New area. New routine. New body. New priorities. New life!!! I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been pretty darn depressed. Despite all the wonderful things going on, the sheer amount of change left me tearful, drained, un-motivated and anxiety ridden….

Recently, I started to feel like depression was, once again, stripping the happiness out of my life. I sat just the other day, frustrated to be feeling so low despite having a life full of amazing people, and then, in a rare moment of clarity, I realised that feeling so empty is no longer an option for me. No more.

When I felt like I was too close to the edge, I decided to do what I do best. Create a new routine. A plan. A guide to help me to dodge the triggers of change by creating a new constants. I wrote down my workout plan for the week, pencilled a “to do” list in my diary, along with times to meet up with my besties. I wrote down a shopping list and a few meal ideas and I took to doing my pregnancy yoga DVD each night. I took on certain jobs in the house. Cooking each night, keeping the kitchen in order and making Mr Rox and I lovely packed lunches.

After a few days, my mind felt calmer. With change happening constantly around me, my little world suddenly felt more stable and I felt like I could breathe again…..

I know that people who have suffered with EDs and other various problems, are often resistant to change and are more vulnerable to relapse during life fluctuations. It is therefore, I think, a great idea to create a little plan for yourself that will counteract some of the triggers that are presented to you.

Change could be one of many things- a house move, a new workplace, a change in your health or abilities, a change in your family circumstances, loss of someone special in your life, breakdown of a relationship…anything. Through it all, it pays to remember to hold on to who you are and don’t be afraid to seek advice and support from those around you.

Tips to Cope with Change

-Talk! Tell people how you feel, about your worries and concerns. A problem shared is a problem halved :-)

- Meet up with your bestest friends! If you move far away from them, plan a future meet up anyway! Every time you see eachother, things will start off where you last left them.

- Don’t drop your hobbies. If running is your thing, put on your running shoes and get outside. I joined a new gym as soon as I moved house to keep exercise as a constant in my life. No matter where I am, whether I’m pregnant or not, I can still get some normality out of being in the fitness environment.

- Stay as active as you can- the endorphins will do you good.

- Set up some mini routines. I like to have a hot drink whilst making mine and Mr Rox’s packed lunches each night. Then it’s off to bed for a read. This simple sequence of events is a pleasant part of my day.

- Try yoga! Wherever you are in the world, doing a bit of yoga or even just some of the breathing techniques, can help you to regain focus when your brain goes loopy!

- Make a plan! Write down things to do each day of the week. Include things that will make you happy :-)

- Rest! Go to bed around the same time each night and plan for a decent sleep. You will be able to cope with much more if you are well rested.

- Time out! Two weeks ago, I felt like everything was bad! I couldn’t stop myself from concentrating on the negative side of everything. Feeling frustrated and angry, I took myself out for a walk and a good old soy cappuccino. I just sat. Wrote things down. Thought. I spent some time putting things in perspective, thinking of the important things in my life. Magically, all the worries blended into the background and I left the coffee shop feeling positive.

Of course, everyone is different and I’m not saying that my little tips will help you deal with illness, grief or other such ordeals. However, focusing on constants- the people and things that we love – will make things a little bit easier to cope with.

Love to you all XOXO

The Secret Lives of Bloggers

Hey!!! My post for today came to me as I was out running. Now, I don’t know how it is where you live but around here, there’s a secret code amongst runners that I like to call, “The Runners’ Nod”. You know how it is. You’re out running, at one with your iPod and then some sweaty middle aged man powers past you and nods his head. You nod back, acknowledging that you are both part of a secret society. It’s a sign of respect as you both  continue pound the pavements……

……..Obviously, runners wear their trainers with pride, showing those around them which “club” they belong to……but bloggers…..well, I guess we’re a little more “underground”. Bloggers are less obvious. Perhaps you’ll find them browsing in the local health store, having a quiet coffee in Starbucks as they type their latest post……or maybe they’re hidden away in their houses…..just waiting for the next new food trend to strike :-)

Bloggers are all about oats. Say the letters OIAJ out loud and immediately a blogger will think of this…..

Mmmmmmmmmm!!! Overnight.Oats.In.A.Jar. Just do it! :-)

Bloggers are nutty for nut butters too. OIAJ+PB = heaven in a jar.

Only bloggers know that this is vegan and one of the best chocolatey delights around. Yes….we really do make the best breakfasts. From OIAJ, to the yoghurt mess…..

…….to the notorious green monster!

And not forgetting the irresistible breakfast parfait….mmmm!

All bursting with nutritious ingredients that carry us further down the path of wellness.

We’re the first to know about what tastes good and trends spread like wild fire around the blogworld! Like these little monsters, who’ve made people all around the globe head straight to the iHerb online store!

Puffins!!

And yes…..I was one of those people….they are yummy!! Or maybe you’re a raw or vegan blogger who needs a protein top up? Ta-dah!!! I bet you have this in your cupboard?! It’s nutritional stats are amazing….but you knew that already didn’t you? :-) Personally, I’m loving Spirutein protein powders at the mo :-)

Food bloggers tend to eat a whole lotta green stuff! And I’m definitely included in that :-)

There are salad beasts galore floating around on the web. Like Tara’s scrummy combination…..And Laura’s tasty mixture! Are you a blogger who has to eat on the run? I bet you’ve got one of these in your purse…..

Oh right…..you’re from the U.S….Lara and Luna bars it is then! :-)

We run, we do yoga…….and then we come home and whip up something healthy in the kitchen! Some of us even like to experiment with the weird and wonderful…………..

You may see a blogger across from you in a restaurant, taking pictures of their eats using a mobile phone. They may even take time over getting the correct light and angle so that it looks juuuuust. Right.

No matter what our own photos turn out like, we can all appreciate a good shot…

Angela’s photography is beautiful :-)

See….you are a member of a special club. A wonderful, caring, group of truly fabulous people. We give each other awards….

…….We have an exclusive party EVERY. SINGLE. WEDNESDAY!!!

I mean, how cool is that?! You can even come in your PJs!!

We have our own book club too ya know? Aaannnnd…………shhhhhhhh……..we actually eat tofu!!!

Bloggers are veggies, vegans, omnivores……or maybe they’re just weird!! ;-)

Hmmmmm??!!! Yes, some of us really do come up with the strangest food combinations! But what the heck?! Anything goes here in food blog land!

No matter what your style is, bloggers have so much in common and in times of need, the compassion of this community can be overwhelming. If you’re going through stuff, recovering/suffering from an ED or simply looking for friends and recipes, you’ll find it all here in the blogosphere:-)

From the bottom of my heart, to everyone reading this, thankyou. You have all inspired me in some way and I wish we all lived closer!! I am honoured and happy to be a member of this special group of people :-D

Next time you go out, see if you can spot a fellow blogger……they’re relatively rare but when you come across one, you’ll know just how special they are (Nicky – that’s you!!)

 - Are you a member of any special clubs?

           - Did you and your friends form a “gang” when growing up?”

Love and hugs,

Emm xoxo

Superfood Special! Read all about it!

Hi guys! Happy Saturday! Do you like my little dude? I’ve been having a good old play with my Skitch app…..I could spend hours painting little superheroes :-)

Rain rain, go away….and don’t blummin come back!

Howdy folks! What an orrible day it is! This morning, Phil and I headed over to the North Yorkshire Moors to have a picnic and do some photography. We felt super happy when we set off, as it was bright and sunny. Alas, an hour after we got to our destination, the rain came a pouring, forcing us back into the car. We did get to see a few cool things though, like a tiny frog, some cool lizards, a couple of rare moths, butterflies and a zillion little grasshoppers! I practiced with Phil’s Nikon D3 camera and had lots of fun shooting the little frog- so cute! I also couldn’t resist doing a bit of yoga/ballet by the river. I’d love to go on a yoga retreat one day :-)
I was really looking forward to taking this little monster out for a run, however, even just looking at the rain is making me feel miserable! As a result, I’m currently snuggled on the sofa with Poppy to keep my feet warm :-) Yeah…..I’d much rather be dry and cosy right now.

"I wanna go for a walk....but it's raining" :-(

On the subject of superfoods, I’ve decided to put together a health post all about their special powers, along with some recipe ideas.
I want to put something together that will be interesting and helpful to readers so if you could answer the following questions, that would be great!
1) What is your favourite superfood?
2) Are there any health concerns that you’d like to know about, in terms of how they can be eased by altering your diet?

During my time at university, I studied a lot about medicine, health and nutrition so I would be so happy to discuss these things. From diabetes to chronic fatigue, from hormonal imbalances to depression, just let me know! :-)

Lots of hugs!!

Big Apple Dreams

Whenever there’s a storm, always look for the rainbow :-)

20110524-011244.jpg
I’m currently on my lunch break. It’s the calm before the storm. Yes, I have 4 patients in at 2pm. Quadruple booked :-( I may have to to chop myself into 4 pieces!
It’s raining so bad right now. Luckily, I now reside in a warm surgery, drinking tea having spent the last 20mins slathering spicy tomato tofu paste onto hand baked oatcakes and topping with tomato chunks. :-) happy emma :-)

20110524-011902.jpg
My pre-run breakkie was also of the oaty variety. Oatmeal mixed with vanilla sun warrior and topped with dried blueberries and PB and Co :-)

20110524-012118.jpg
The blogworld is right again! Vanilla sun warrior is the bomb dot com! It has a very natural, not overly sweet taste and turns oatmeal into a creamy delight! The nutritional stats are stellar too!

Although I was cream crackered this morning, I had a great 5mile run to work. I arrived a hot mess and spent the rest of the morning topping my mug up with hot tea :-)

When I entered my surgery, I came across a great thankyou card that a patient had posted to me. NYC how I heart thee!

20110524-012659.jpg
I really hope that I get to visit New York again soon. I have so many places yet to explore there!
Anyhow….I’ll bid you adieu for now. I have a yoga/dinner date after work and am really looking forward to it. Michelle, I’ll see ya later! Until next time ladies :-)
Xoxo

Wellness Wednesday!

Wellness Wheel

Heeeeyyyyyup Ladies! I hope you’re all having a good week. It’s Wellness Wednesday again….I can’t believe how fast the weeks are flying by! Anyway….as I was running along my usual route to work this morning, I got to thinking, “Why do I like to blog so much?” Well, apart from all the FABULOUS PEOPLE I’ve “met” through blogging, this little hobby now occupies one of the missing jigsaw pieces in the puzzle that is me :-)

One thing that I can draw from my limited life experiences, is that wellness has a LOT of aspects to it! To feel content and happy, everything doesn’t always have to be fine and dandy….but it is important that all of the aspects of your wellness wheel keep on turning. Blogging not only has a highly social aspect to it but the community often act as a support network for those recovering from eating disorders, sports injury, depression or anything that is causing worry or distress. It helps to rebuild feelings of wellbeing :-)

I suffered from anorexia for several years and every single aspect of wellness came crumbling down. Keeping the wheel turning became an immense challenge for me, as I tried to re-establish health and balance in each area. Luckily, all of that is behind me. I went through a treatment and recovery programme and, like Carrie, I now feel that raw and vegan cuisine has been partly responsible for my healing.

How do I keep my wellness wheel turning?

- PHYSICAL – I run most days, do yoga daily and  zumbaaaa!!! I also like jumping around when I think nobody’s watching :-) and nourish my body with healthy and nutritious eats…and the occasional treat of course ;-)

This mornings breakkie - chia oatmeal with blueberries, raspberries and my current obsession - Clearsprings apple and pineapple fruit puree - YUM!!

Yoga helps to harmonise me :-)

I <3 Ballet

my current fave - the Buddha bowl

- EMOTIONAL – Sometimes my demanding job can leave me feeling emotionally drained, as it’s all about focusing 100% on others all day. I accept this and don’t rush around a lot on such days. Watching a chick flick whilst drinking tea works wonders! My boyfriend and friends are AMAZING and have always been there through the tough times – love you guys!! Yes you know who you are! ;-)

....and thats ma boyfriend!...

- SOCIAL- Regular Starbucks dates with my best friends, blogging and seeing the same beautiful faces in my classes each week, keep me socially smiley!

one fab friend!

- INTELLECTUAL – 2 years ago I felt like my brain cogs had stopped turning so I oiled them up and went on a 15month course to advance my skills. It definitely made me feel more settled again :-)

- SPIRITUAL – Ommmmmm….yoga.Is.Amazing. Nuff said!

- ENVIRONMENTAL- further update on my environment in pending future!

- OCCUPATIONAL – I’ve learnt a lot in the 5 years since I qualified. The main thing I do to avoid occupational problems is to keep out of any gossip! Gossip kills! I work my own way and have come to accept that everyone’s different!

Ok guys….I’m officially asleep! Until tomorrow….or today…oops I really gotta get to bed!!

How do you keep your wellness wheel turning?

xoxo
